Music & Books

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”  – Victor Hugo “Books are the quietest and most constant of friends, they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers” – Charles W. Eliot

It’s a New Year

If I made New Year’s resolutions, which I personally never do, I would vow to be healthier and happier and pay closer attention to my spiritual side. A New Year and a new start , who couldn’t use one of those? I do believe this site could use a little inspiration and sprucing up too, so I apologize in advance if it looks a bit haphazard while I piddle around with it.

To start off the new year, Saturday, January 9th at 8pm To Write Love on Her Arms is holding an evening of songs, conversation and hope called Heavy & Light, at the Orlando House of Blues in Orlando Florida.

heavy&light

This is the 3rd annual Heavy & Light and it promises to be an exciting evening of music with Mat Kearney, Aaron Gillespie of  Underoath and The Almost, Zach Williams , a reading by Anis Mojgani and much much more.

Songs, Conversation and Hope.  There will be so much hope and so much promise .  Here is a link so you can see some highlights of Heavy & Light 2009.

Jamie Tworkowski wrote on the TWLOHA blog on Christmas Eve…

“Wherever you’re at tonight, however heavy or light the night is, whatever scene it finds you living – please know that you matter very much. Please know that you are something priceless, something beautiful and entirely unique. There is hope for you. There is hope for all of us. 2010 has never happened before and the same is true about tomorrow.”

That about sums it all up.

Jamie Tworkowski wins the Good Woodie!

Jamie Tworkowski, the founder of To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), a non-profit movement that is dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide, has won the prestigious Good Woodie award!

The Good Woodie is awarded to the artist whose commitment to a social cause has effected the greatest change this year.

Jamie says, “TWLOHA is a story that I am proud to be part of. The best stories are the ones that surprise you and inspire you to change. Thanks for all you do to make ours that sort of story. It’s my honor to represent you at the Woodie Awards tonight, to get to be there on behalf of people who struggle and people who care.”

Jamie was the only person nominated by MTV that wasn’t a musician with a song of his own, so MTV allowed him to choose a song by an artist or group for his nomination video. After giving it a lot of thought, Jamie chose Switchfoot’s “Needle and Haystack Life” from their new album “Hello Hurricane (CD/DVD).”

“No, don’t let go
Don’t give up hope
All is forgiven
You breathe it in
The highs and lows
We call it living

All is not lost
All is not lost
Become who you are
It happens once in a lifetime”

When accepting the award Jamie thoughtfully accepted on behalf of all people battling depression and drug addiction.

We would like to thank Jamie for all that he has given of himself to this cause and to the thousands of people who  support TWLOHA and provide hope for people who so desperately need it.

5 Stages of Grief ~ Diane Birch

5 Stages of Grief ~ Diane Birch

Diane Birch takes us through the 5 Stage of Grief in this beautiful song of hers Nothing But a Miracle, from her new album titled Bible Belt. This song really touched me as did the video. It reminds us that even in the most difficult times, things change, they get better, we just need to hang on. We can find beauty in music and understanding with our friends and family and sometimes even strangers.

Trevor Project benefits from book sales

Susan Parker a friend of The Trevor Project has written a new memoir titled Walking in the Deep End.  This is an authentic, sincere account of the difficulties she faced as an 11 year child navigating her way through a dysfunctional family, on through her college years dealing with depression and bulimia.

sp

Kirkus Discoveries writes….  “Parker spent her college years using binge-eating as an emotional crutch and developed a serious case of bulimia, with which she struggled for years. The memoir’s last third is by far the most truthful and endearing segment, as readers meet the now-41-year-old mother Parker, in the process of a messy divorce triggered by the discovery that she is gay. Even in the face of endless challenges, the author remains optimistic, looking toward her spirituality to guide her through dark times. She shows a gift for storytelling, and as a result, the book is compelling and enthralling.”

On October 9, 2009 Amazon will have Susan’s book available. Anyone who orders a copy of the book this day will have the opportunity to designate The Trevor Project to receive a portion of the proceeds. Your purchase will automatically enter you into a drawing to win one of five autographed copies of the book as well as one of three writing journals.

The author will also be talking to readers via Sype, Twitter and Facebook.

Tonight at 8pm people from around the world are invited to light a candle near a window in remembrance of a loved one that has taken their life or for the survivors of suicide.

I will be lighting one candle for Shelby, and 100 others remembering all the lost souls that have taken their lives because they couldn’t see another way.

For Shelby’s girls ~ I light candles for you, and hope that you know how very much you are loved.

National Suicide Prevention Week Sept 6th – 12th

35th Annual National Suicide Prevention Week has started.

Suicide is a leading cause of death for people worldwide, and one of the three leading causes of death for young people under 25. Every year, approximately one million people die by suicide – one death every two minutes. The World Health Organization estimates that by the year 2020, this annual toll of suicide deaths will have risen to one and half million.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, in the state of Washington, suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 24.

The Youth Suicide Prevention program in Washington states that, most suicidal young people don’t really want to die, they just want their pain to end.  About 80 percent of the time, people who kill themselves have given definite signals or talked about suicide.  The key to prevention is to know these signs and what to do to help.

Death, even when expected, is hard for anyone to deal with, but a suicidal death is often more difficult for friends, family, and loved ones to understand. Often there are warning signs, in the form of depression or a mental illness, and other times suicide seems to strike seemingly out of nowhere.

This week it is important to get the word out and fight the stigma associated with depression and mental illness. Depression is a serious medical condition, it’s not something that you have made up in your head. It’s more than just feeling “down in the dumps” or “blue” for a few days. It’s feeling “down” and “low” and “hopeless” for weeks at a time.

Watch the video of Pete Wentz the talented song writer and Bass player of Fall Out Boy talk about his issues with depression and suicidal thoughts on HalfofUs.org

Remember to reach out and share your thoughts and feelings with friends, counselors, role models and parents this week to help raise awareness and save lives!

Project 2996

WTC Lights

I think when I started my first blog, the first post was whining about my ex husband. Nothing note worthy or exceptional, or even remotely interesting.

It didn’t take me long however to discover there were thousands of wonderful people out there that really made a difference blogging about relevant issues and making themselves heard.  When I heard about a tribute to the victims of September 11th, I felt compelled to be a part of it.

Project 2,996 is a tribute to the victims of 9/11, started by D. Challener Roe.

On September 11, 2006, more than 3,000 bloggers joined together to remember the victims of 9/11.

Each year bloggers have honored them by remembering their lives, and not by remembering their murderers.

If you would like to help out by pledging to post a tribute on your own blog on 9/11  this year, please click this link to Project 2996 and sign up to honor one of the victims.

Sadly this year only 687 of the 2996 names have been assigned to bloggers for their tributes to be written.

Can you please help?

While I sit home in the office building our website and  doing the hard work (poor me, it sucks to be old )  Madison and her brother Matthew are in Sacramento headed towards the Ampitheatre to hang with their friends and watch their favorite bands rock Sacramento!

Don’t forget to stop by TWLOHA’s booth and show your support!
